To mark the Finnish design brand’s 60th anniversary of its iconic print design Unikko, Marimekko has teamed up with Apartamento to open Bar Unikko, a conceptual takeover of a Milanese café that will host a series of Unikko-inspired events.
While Marimekko is globally renowned for its art of printmaking and timeless and functional designs, founder Armi Ratia once famously stated that Marimekko could have equally taken the form of an ice cream parlour, a flower shop or even modern jazz, as long as it would bring joy to people’s everyday lives. Bar Unikko, a week-long pop-up space in Milan, brings this philosophy into fruition.
‘Marimekko has always been a philosophy for living and a way of life above all else,’ says Rebekka Bay, creative director at Marimekko. ‘As part of our year-long series of Unikko 60th anniversary celebrations, we invited Apartamento to co-conceptualise the spirit of our iconic Unikko print into something entirely new. With Bar Unikko, we present a café, a brand experience and a hangout destination all at once. To me, this embodies the spirit of Unikko perfectly.’
Throughout Milan Design Week, Bar Unikko will unveil limited-edition espresso cups, mix and mach coffee mugs and wooden trays in three different Unikko scales, ranging from repetitive miniature Unikko to a magnified abstract expression of the hero print. The Unikko 60th anniversary products come in three delicious colorways, which designerMaija Isolafirst introduced in the 1960’s when she designed Unikko: sunset orange, cobalt blue and the classic red.
